Clinical case reports are considered to be one of the oldest forms of exchange and presentation of medical knowledge. A clinical case report or case study is usually retrospective and based on observations from clinical practice. Clinical case reports lay the groundwork for medical literature by presenting data that has not been shown before.

Case reports are a kind of descriptive studies based on unique uncontrolled observations of patients.
Case series are generally small descriptive studies that describe treatment outcomes of multiple patients. This type of study can describe characteristics or results in a specialized group of people, but cannot compare them to people who are treated differently or have a different disease.
