Decentralized digital clinical trials DDCT

Decentralized Digital Clinical Trials (DDCTs) are clinical studies or trials in which processes are digitalized and decentralized (outside a study center). These trials are currently transforming clinical trials, as they offer enormous advantages over traditional clinical trials.

The advantages of a decentralized digital clinical trial

  • They are more time and cost effective.
  • They are patient-centered, facilitate participation, and are thus more inclusive and increase participation.
  • Thus, they lead to higher recruitment numbers and, through more diverse, representative samples, result in a better data base for health system decision-making.
  • They are less prone to errors, which saves time and, above all, frustrating work in monitoring and data management.
  • They not only relieve us, but above all also the already overburdened medical study staff in the clinics.
  • They save paper and many ways and are therefore more environmentally friendly.

In December 2022, the ACT EU Initiative published a first guideline on decentralized digital clinical trials, which provides initial guidance for all stakeholders. We have summarized the guideline for you. Read the most important facts in brief.
